Yeah there was a short piece this morning on NPR's business report (which usually SUCKS) about how the Dems problem is that they are just getting their core customers psyched (by Dean) while the Repubs are trying to broaden their market share. Think GM vs. Toyota. Specifically they noted Mehlman's efforts along these lines to reach out to minority communities.

As some of the press coverage of Mehlman's "apology" to the black community noted, some of this is probably to make whites more comfortable in the party -- see, we're not actually racists, even though all the old white racists who were Southern Dems (with the possible exception of Robert Byrd) have switched over to our party.

But don't forget that Repubs seem to think they've found an issue they can use to attract blacks and hispanics: gay-bashing. I can just hear Mehlman at La Raza now: "You're right that many people in my party have thought of you as a bunch of wetbacks that mow our lawns. That was wrong. But let's not bicker and argue over who killed who -- we don't want to let those faggots get MARRIED now, do we?"

that's sharp. indeed, if the GOP found any urban black traction in the last election it was at least in large part on the back of the not-so-subtle gaybashing theme. great point strategery4. excellent point. thanks.
